The Only Thing

I go out, take in- a deep, long breath
fresh, so pure, almost dizzying
tangy, wet, oh the typical rain scent
Let it rain, I say. Let it rain.
You know why?
'Cuz this scent's the only thing, we both can smell.

I look around, move-the wind passes by
cool, so crisp, almost heady
nippy, ruffling, oh the typical rain breeze
Let it rain, I say. Let it rain.
You know why?
'Cuz this wind's the only thing, we both can feel.

I extend, my hand-and a drop falls on it
chilly, so raw, almost stunning
spotless, sparkling, oh the typical rain drop
Let it rain, I say. Let it rain.
You know why?
'Cuz this drop's the only thing, we both can touch.

I sit down, and listen-the sound of the clouds
brusque, so loud, almost pounding
snarl, rumbling, oh the typical rain roar
Let it rain, I say. Let it rain.
You know why?
'Cuz this roar's the only thing, we both can hear.

I look up, the sky-a vast stretch it is
blue, and black, almost bruised
murky, so sombre, oh the typical rain sky
Let it rain, I say. Let it rain.
You know why?
'Cuz this sky's the only thing, we both can see.

The Only Thing.

So dear rain,
Please do come again.

P.S. And this is my favourite song. :)
Death Cab for Cutie is SO good.
I'll Follow You Into the Dark

I will.

My friend told me that Grapevine Fires is their best ever, and he's a real music enthusiast so do check that one out if you haven't already heard it. :)

Yes, Grapewine Fires really is amazing, in ways far more than one.

Also, I love the poem. Left to ponder upon how ostensible it really is. :)

Hi Srishti!

I'd read this poem the time you'd published it, but my laziness, and busy schedule at that time kept me from commenting.

Well, is this poem written by you, or lyrics of some song?

Either ways, I really liked it very much--especially this idea of the consolation offered to two lovers against distance by experiencing identical sensations. Very romantic. :)

There's a very old Hindi song whose lyrics I'd remembered on reading this poem. One of the stanzas in the Hindi lyrics speaks of the same concept. While in your poem, the concept has been laid out through vivid examples, in the lyrics below, it has been 'generalized'. :)

Dil bahal toh jaaega is khayal se

Haal mil gayaa tumhara apne haal se

Raat beqaraar thi, beqaraar hai...

Tumhara intezaar hai

Tum pukaar lo...

For me, it is a very, very beautiful song. I don't know if you listen to old Hindi songs, but some of them contain romanticism of the highest order--absolutely comparable to the likes of Shakespeare and Keats. :)

Thanks for the heart-warming poetry.

TC.

PS: You've been thanked (not directly, though) in one of my posts. Which one is it, is for you to find out. ;)

Well, I couldn't resist telling you of the preceding stanza of the above song:

Ohnth pe liye huay dil ki baat hum

Jaagate rahe yahaan kitni raat hum

Mukhtasar si baat hai...

Tum se pyaar hai.

Tum pukaar lo...

Tumhaara intezaar hai

Well, so though I've not watched the movie, so don't know the context. But seems like the lyricist is hinting at inability of the lover to express his love to the one he had fallen in love with. And the lady also seems to feel the same about it. But only because he's not been able to express his feelings verbally, their relationship is not getting back on track.

Or taking the entire song into view, probably both the lovers had parted because of circumstances or a quarrel, and now want to get back together, but none of them is taking the 'initiative' as maybe both are busy pretending they are 'alright' without the other.

'Mukhtasar' is most likely to mean 'obvious'.

Either ways, these lyrics have succeeded in capturing extremely complex emotions through very simple ideas. :)

Remember, the lyrics in the first comment are actually the second stanza in the song. And the ones in this comment are the first stanza. Hopefully, now you'll be better able to understand the song. :)

Sorry, I goofed up with last two lines in the second comment.

Their order should be reversed and be:

Tumhaara intezaar hai

Tum pukaar lo...

Thank you so much Ketan!!

No, this a poem written by me. Thank you once again.

I love old hindi songs! I especially love Rajnigandha and O saathi re by kishore Kumar.
I remember each and every word of Mai Shayar toh nahi.

You would too if your dad played it EVERY SINGLE TIME he drove.
Seriously.

And the this song too is beautiful. :)
